Coweta Schools elect 2006 Teachers of the Year

Teachers of the Year for each of Coweta County’s 28 public schools have been elected by their fellow faculty members. They will participate in the May 15 Coweta County Teacher of the Year Program, which the Board of Education presents annually with the Newnan Pilot Club.

The 2006 Teachers of the Year (TOTYs) from each school are:

From elementary schools: Cristy Fogle, Kindergarten Teacher (Arbor Springs); Darrell Hynson, Special Education Teacher (Arnco-Sargent); Christy Talmage 3rd Grade Teacher (Atkinson); Nancy LeVeau, Kindergarten Teacher (Canongate); Audrey Smith, Kindergarten Teacher (Eastside); Charlotte King, 1st Grade Teacher (Elm Street); Mary Dean, 2nd Grade Teacher (Jefferson Parkway); Latrina Gates, 5th Grade Teacher (Grantville); Tracy Lipsey, Pre-Kindergarten Teacher (Maggie Brown); Sony Edwards, 4th Grade Teacher (Moreland); Teresa Barr, 5th Grade Special Education Teacher (Newnan Crossing); Gardner Culpepper, Physical Education Teacher (Northside); Terri Buckland Kindergarten Teacher (Poplar Road); Kim Crawford, 1st Grade Teacher (Ruth Hill); Jill Edwards, 5th Grade Teacher (Thomas Crossroads); Jennifer Mathura, Kindergarten Teacher (Western); Tina Marsh, 3rd Grade Teacher (White Oak); Noel Smith, 3rd Grade Teacher (Willis Road.)

2005 Teachers of the Year will nominate finalists from the 28 2006 Teachers of the Year. The 2006 Coweta Teacher of the Year will be named from among three finalists at the May 15 Teacher of the Year event, held at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts on Lower Fayetteville Road in Newnan. The 2005 Coweta County Teacher of the Year is science teacher Kelley Finger of Newnan High School.

Teachers of the Year are selected by their peers for the quality of their teaching, professional development, teaching philosophy and methods, community involvement, and contributions to education. From the local nominees will come three finalists, one of whom will be chosen Coweta Teacher of the Year and nominee for Georgia Teacher of the Year.

The Coweta County School System is the only school system in Georgia with three state teachers of the year, including Nancy Royal, Jamie Lipscomb and Lorraine Johnson. There have also been twelve Georgia TOTY semi-finalists from Coweta since 1986, and Georgia Teacher of the Year Johnson was one of four finalists for national Teacher of the Year.
