Grantville Elementary School will
officially be renamed “Glanton Elementary School” this Monday,
September 15, at 5:00 p.m., at a dedication ceremony held at the
Highway 29 school.
Former Grantville Principal Thomas Glanton will appear as the
guest of honor at the ceremony, which will be held in the
school’s cafeteria.
Principal Katie Garrett and the school’s faculty and staff will
host the 5:00 p.m. event, and parents and members of the public
are invited to attend.
Grantville Elementary School was opened in 2004. The Coweta
County Board of Education formally voted to rename the school in
honor of long-time Grantville teacher and principal at its July
board meeting, Glanton – himself a Grantville High School
graduate – began teaching at his alma mater in 1933, and became
principal of the school (and one of the youngest principals ever
in the state of Georgia) in 1935. He retired in 1972.
Grantville’s former elementary school – now Grantville’s
Municipal Center – was named after Glanton in the 1980’s, in
honor of his years of service to education in the city and
county. The renaming on Monday will return the name “Glanton” to
the south Coweta city’s elementary school.
Glanton, 96, and a veteran of World War II, lives in Newnan. He
will speak at Monday’s renaming ceremony along with school and
local officials and citizens. |
