Three Coweta County elementary academic bowl teams sweep top three spots in regional finals

Coweta County elementary school teams swept the seven-county West Georgia RESA Academic Bowl Finals, held in Carrollton on February 26.

Arbor Springs Elementary Schools placed first in the 16-team competition, with Atkinson Elementary’s team placing 2nd and Willis Road placing 3rd. The annual competition was held at Sand Hill Elementary in Carroll County.

Coweta County elementary schools made up six of the top 16 teams at the finals, in addition to winning the top three spots.

Glanton Elementary, White Oak Elementary and Moreland Elementary teams also competed at the February 26 meet, based on their school teams’ strong performances during this year’s bowls.

Throughout the school year, a total of 52 elementary schools from the Coweta, Carroll, Carrollton City, Troup, Harris, Meriwether and Heard school districts send teams to West Georgia RESA’s Academic Bowl competitions. At the end of the season the top 16 teams in the region - based on total points at the end of a year’s competition - are invited to compete in the district finals. At the finals, the top point earners after three rounds of competitions are awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place titles.

.“For the past few years, Coweta has had a high showing at the finals,” said Bobbi Deling, the Reach teacher who coaches Arbor Spring’s team along with Kindergarten teacher Lynne Pence. “We had the top three last year, too,” with Atkinson Elementary placing 1st, Arbor Springs second, and Northside 3rd in the regional competition in 2008, said Deling.

The February 26 Finals ended the elementary academic bowl season, though regional middle and high school academic bowl teams are still competing.
