Press Release
Coweta County Schools

Date: March 5, 2010

Parents can apply for limited Pre-Kindergarten spaces March 8-19; Pre-K registration held March 29-April 30

Parents who wish to secure a spot for their child in next year’s Coweta County School System Pre-Kindergarten classes can do so at their child’s district school between Monday, March 8 and Friday, March 19.

During that time, parents can apply for a spot in the limited-space Pre-K classes for the 2010-11 school year. Pre-K application ends at noon on Friday, March 19, and drawing for spots will be held at schools at 1:00 p.m. on March 19.

Children must be four years old on or before September 1, 2010 to be eligible for next year’s Pre-Kindergarten. Parents can call call 770-254-2820 to inquire about which elementary school district serves their home.

Unlike other elementary school grades, there are a limited number of Pre-K classes in Coweta schools. If more than 20 students apply for an available Pre-K class, the school must hold a lottery drawing to determine placement in the class. The first 20 students drawn will be awarded a spot in that school’s Pre-K class; the remaining names will be placed in order of draw on a waiting list for that school, in case spaces in the class open later.

Parents can complete a Coweta County Pre-K application form for each child and place it in the lottery box at their direct school. No enrollment documentation is required to apply for the Pre-K lottery March 8 through 19. Parents do not need to be present for the drawing on March 19.

Pre-K students in the, Ruth Hill, Elm Street, Atkinson, and Jefferson Parkway districts will apply for slots at Jefferson Parkway Elementary School, since those schools’ Pre-K classes are located at Jefferson Parkway. All other students should apply at their district school.

Elementary schools will accept Pre-K applications for eligible students on Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during March 8 through 19. To accommodate parents’ work schedules, all schools will hold an expanded lottery enrollment day from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 18.

After the March 19 lottery drawing, parents will be able to formally register their child for 2010-2011 Pre-Kindergarten. Registration for Pre-K classes will be held on different weeks at the Central Registration Center, depending on which elementary school a child will attend (see calendar, below).

Early registration for 2010-11 Kindergarten students will be held separately in May.

The Central Registration Center is located at 167 Werz Industrial Drive in Newnan (registration entrance is at the back of the building). Parents are asked to call the Werz Boulevard Central Registration Center at 770-254-5551 to schedule an appointment during their school’s Pre-Kindergarten
registration week.

The registration schedule for 2010-11 Pre-K is:

March 29 – April 2: Brooks, Northside, Welch, Western, White Oak and Willis Road

April 12 –16: Arbor Springs, Arnco-Sargent, Canongate Glanton, and Thomas Crossroads

April 19 –23: Eastside, Moreland, Newnan Crossing and Poplar Road

April 26 –30: Jefferson Parkway (includes Ruth Hill, Elm Street, Atkinson, and Jefferson Parkway)

During the April Pre-K and May and Kindergarten registration period, the Central Registration Center’s hours of operation will be: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Thursdays: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Parents are urged to call for an appointment.

More information about registration times and procedures can be found at elementary schools, or by calling the registration office at 770-254-5551. Information about new student registration, printable registration forms and directions to the Central Office can also be found at www.cowetaschools.org.

After-School Programs are also available at Coweta County schools, and parents can inquire about fees and times at their district school.

Georgia’s four-year-old Pre-Kindergarten classes are also offered at private day care centers around Coweta County, which register students separately.
