Coweta School Board votes to keep Property tax rate at same level

The Coweta County Board of Education voted Tuesday, August 9, to set the 2011 ad valorem millage rate for the Coweta County School System at 18.59 mills. The rate is a continuation of last year’s tax rate.

This is the eighth year the local property tax rate for schools has been set at 18.59 mills. The Board also voted to keep the school system’s bonded indebtedness tax rate at 0 mills, as it has for the past 10 years.

The county’s tax digest – the local tax base upon which the millage rate is set - decreased by 4.87 percent from 2010 to 2011.

The millage rate approved by the board will fund the local share of the school system’s 2011-12 fiscal year operations, which began July 1. Local property taxes account for approximately half of the funding for maintenance and operations of the school system.

In June, the school board approved a budget of $165,483,455 for the 2012 fiscal year, which ends June 30, 2012. The budget was approximately $200,000 less than the school system budget of $165.7 adopted in June, 2010.
