Welcome to Canongate Elementary!
Welcome to another exciting year at Canongate Elementary School, home of the Cubs. We are thrilled to have such a hard-working and dedicated staff this year. They have worked diligently over the past month to prepare an exciting and engaging curriculum for your child. This year is going to be a stimulating and enlightening time for your child.
We are happy and excited to report that Canongate Elementary has made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) again! This is the ninth year in a row that we have met this state criteria. The achievement was made possible through the hard work and dedication of our students, teachers, parents, and community.
I want to share some important information concerning the influence of home on school success that I read from the September/October issue of Principal, 2004. The question “What percentage of the child’s waking hours, from birth to high school, are spent at home and at school?” was presented. The answer is that 13.35% of a child’s waking hours are spent in school by the time he/she turns 18 which means 86.64% of time is spent out of school, hopefully, most at home.
After I read through the math of the problem and realized the outcome, I was amazed. So often we think children spend most of their time in school but when considering the long term, that is not so. Therefore, I hope you will take the time to read over your child’s homework each night to reinforce what we are teaching your child at school. So often, we as parents, (myself included) leave the teaching to teachers when in reality, we as parents, are our child’s best teacher. Therefore, I hope you see along with our staff, how important the home connection is for our children. Please feel free to contact the teachers and myself whenever you have questions and/or concerns. We need to work together in order to truly become a learning community.
Therefore, here are some ways in which you can help your child achieve his/her personal goals through the following procedures and activities:
- Check and sign your child’s agenda every night and the purple Cub folder every Monday.
- Review your child’s homework after it has been completed and help make any needed corrections or changes.
- Arrive at school by 7:50 am to give your child adequate time to be in the classroom and ready for instruction by 8:00 am.
- If you are visiting your child at school, please enter through the front door and sign in and receive a visitor badge.
- Please refrain from signing your child out after 2:00 p.m. unless it is an extreme emergency.
Again, thank you for a great beginning. The Canongate community continues to impress me with the support you give to our school faculty but most importantly your children. Please feel free to contact me if you ever have any concerns and/or suggestions. Again, we are glad to be a part of this dedicated community of learners.
Sincerely,
Dr. Julie H. Lutz
