A Message From the Principal….
August 8, 2011
Welcome back! I hope that your summer was restful and enjoyable. Excitement is in the air as we begin the 2011-2012 school year. Through the combined efforts of the teachers, students, and parents, I am proud to announce that Glanton made AYP again this year! AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) is an accountability measure coming from the federal guidelines known as No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Please look for more details about the CRCT and AYP at our annual Title 1 parent meeting on August 30. An invitation will be sent home soon with more details.
Glanton will implement a positive reward behavior program this year called “C.A.R.E.” (Children Are Responsible Everyday) . Students will have the opportunity three times a day to earn a maximum of 3 behavior points. If they have the required number of points at the end of the week, they will be able to participate in Fun Friday activities. Those not earning Fun Friday will be participating in small group discussions about appropriate school behavior with administrative staff. The goal is for students to learn to make appropriate behavior choices. The program stresses the fact that once a point is earned it cannot be taken away. Conversely, if a student does not earn a point for one of the time frames, he/she has two more opportunities to make some behavior changes. Points will be awarded daily at 10:00, 12:00, and 2:00. Students earning the required number of points at the end of each 9 week grading period will be invited to attend a recognition ceremony to celebrate their behavior accomplishments. The faculty and staff are excited about this program and feel that it will be something new and interesting for the students to work on. Look for more details from your child’s teacher.
Car riders may continue to be dropped off in the front of the school starting at 7:25. Car rider pick-up in the afternoon will begin at 2:30. We will motion for 5/6 vehicles to pull up and stop. Please do not exit your vehicle. Your child will be escorted to your vehicle. Only school personnel will be in the front hallway during dismissal. This is for the safety of all the children.
Per the student handbook, students may not be checked out after 2:00. All transportation changes will have to be in writing. We will not accept changes over the phone.
All visitors will check in and out at the front office and wear a visitor badge.
If your child arrives after 8:00, he/she needs to pick up a tardy slip from the office. This will help to ensure they are counted present instead of absent. Regular attendance and being on time greatly benefits all children.
Early checkouts are counted as tardies and will negatively impact your child’s academic performance, and may prohibit them from receiving an attendance award. We know that you will work with us this year to maximize the opportunities available for your children.
We are hoping to increase our number of parent volunteers this year. Please let your child’s homeroom teacher know if you can help us in any way. There are many ways to volunteer and the teachers will be happy to discuss ways that you can help.
Come by anytime. My door is always open!
